Blather, Knitting and a Contest

You know the pool I told you about, the little one that keeps us cool in the heat of the day? This is a picutre of it without us in it, of course, because it has been cloudy and rainy for most of the weekend. As you can plainly see, once we are in there on the little floaties, there is not much movement unless we knock each other off the floaties. (And I love to do that, as long as all books are out of the way!) The only benefit of all the rain is that I did not have to water the garden, and I was able to get tomato cages on the poor plants that were beat up the other night in the hailstorm.

We went and got massages on Saturday, mine was purely therapeutic, lolol. The masseuse worked on my arm for a good portion of the hour, and then at the end she said it was time to go to the doctor and quit whimping out. I have finally agreed and will make an appointment first think Monday morning (and refuse to change it again). But I have started sleeping in the braces I have had for a zillion years and hate.

Blather and a Contest

Okay, what is going on with Blogger? It will let me add pictures, but I cannot move them around as I used to, and who wants all the pictures at the top of the post?

We had a great weekend, DD2 decided we should invite company for a barbecue on Sunday, which required a heap of cleaning before hand as we had not completed unpacking or cleaning since our trip to GA. In addition, one of the people we invited was allergic to dogs, so we had to get as much doggy dirt out of the house as possible. I don’t know if you remember my stories about DD2, she likes to sit on the couch in case it tries to float away, so I was amazed at the work I got out of her. She cleaned up the deck (it was still piled high with junk from the move), cut the grass in the back yard and we planted veggies and flowers. I was able to use the military discount for the holiday weekend and got wonderful prices at Home Depot on gardening wants. We were very stiff by the end of the day, but the yard looks very good.

About 5 minutes after our guests arrived on Sunday the rain started; it was so stereotypical it was funny. It wasn’t just rain; it was a torrential down pour with hail and thunder. It rained like that for at least an hour, it was a good thing I had crudités prepared, because everyone was hungry by the time I could light the grill. And since everyone was so hungry, no one complained that the sweet potatoes were a little charred in spots. :-)

I will post pictures of the flowers and gardens this weekend when I can figure out how to do it. Grrrrrr

This is my 200th post and I want to celebrate; besides sometimes things get boring in blogger land if there are no contests to keep up the adrenaline. I am not going to ask you to jump through hoops; all you have to do is leave me a comment about what you think about backgrounds with lots of designs for blogs. Are they good or are they a pain? To me they are sometimes distracting, but they seem to have become very popular. Blather and a Hint

Don’t you hate it when you get used to ready people’s blogs and then all of a sudden you go there and they let you down? I really hate it, especially when I am the one doing the letting down. I got home every night, thought about trying to blog, and just was way too tired to put two words together. The animals were lucky to be fed and watered. Remember the conference I told you about? That took place last week and ran until Friday afternoon at 6pm. Those people whipped me, I tell you, and I hate sponsoring conferences, especially when we are really trying to get something done, instead of pretending like we are working. There was no knitting, no reading, and no fun of any kind for me, just the conference. However on the bright side, there were no dramas (catfights or bitch fights) and the work was accomplished, even though they said I was mean (like I care!)

Come Saturday, I was so tired; I got up and fed and medicated all of the animals, let them out and back in (mud and all) and went back to bed. I got up for a while at 3, but was back in bed by 630. And Sunday was not much better; however, I had signed up for the Wee Tiny Sock Swap and knew I had to get my little sockie done. And I did using the most gorgeous Panda yarn, I will post the pix later, when I am back at my own PC. It has gone out in the mail today, I am so proud, I accomplished one two inch sock for the entire week lololol.

Blather, Contests, and Manic Monday

Whooosh, no knitting for me today. Conference planning, conference shopping, and conference set up. Yuck yuck yuck. And then dinner out with a group of the people from out of town. I would much rather sit home with the animals and knit! I think I am becoming a curmudgeon. lolol

Whiskers on Wednesday

I have been so sleepy; Di has not been sleeping well, which means that I am not sleeping well (but more on that tomorrow.) Since today is Wednesday, I want to tell you about Jill, our skinny cat, who has a face like Snagglepuss, except she is considered blue (gray) and not pink. She likes to play with the bottle caps from our water bottles, if she sees one sitting on the counter or on an end table, she will get it and carry it in her mouth like a dog to where she wants to play. Jill can bat a single bottle cap around the house for hours without getting bored, she is more likely to knock it somewhere that she can’t get to (under the closet door, under the stove, behind the washer) rather than grow bored. And if one of the other cats wants to get in on the fun, Jill will pick up her cap and carry it away so they can’t. In our last house we pulled the stove out to replace the floor and found hundreds of the darn things sitting there gathering dust. The other day I opened the front closet to get a pair of shoes, found a zillion more bottle caps, that I, like a responsible adult, picked up, and put in the recycling bin. Of course the slug daughter thinks it is terribly funny, so she doesn’t bend over to pick up a single one (or anything else) lololol.

Bottle caps are not Jill’s only fun pastime; she also likes to beat up Lola, our Chihuahua. Lola can be sleeping soundly (normally under the blankets) and Jill will slink over to her and thwap Lola with her paw. She can do a repeat thwap so fast my mouth drops open, it’s almost like watching a cartoon character. I guess she likes the noise it makes, because she will do it continuously until Lola gets up and chases her (they have a love hate relationship, Jill likes to thwap Lola and Lola hates to be thwapped.) Jill does this in the middles of the night to, so whoever is in bed with them gets to wake up to the sound of cat paw against dog head, which is truly hilarious, because I thought it was the dog who was supposed to hate the cats.

I truly love my pets, they get me through the day (thought not so much the night).

Blather, A Contest, and Friday Fill Ins

This has been an odd/weird/difficult week, but I am knitting on. :-) The sweater of many stitches is slowly growing (unfortunately not as fast as I am lolol) I still work in a row or two on the afghan in the evening, and I am starting a pair of socks. I feel odd when I don’t have more than a gazillion projects going, even if they end up being frogged. My little sister (she is 15 months younger than I am) has been having mini strokes and has become so disabled that she will be having to go into an assisted living community (not the apartments, but the convalescence area). I wish I could be there for her, but I do not know what I could do to help her. She did have day help, but she has evidently become difficult to handle and they either quit or she fires them. Oh, the stages of life suck.

Snow seems to be the biggest thing in my life now, I am so glad that it disappears quickly, otherwise I would feel like I am in an igloo. Wednesday when I left work, it was mini-hailing, snowing, thundering and lightening. Moreover, my ten-minute drive home ended up being about 40 minutes, yuck. We are supposed to have another storm tomorrow, predictions are that it can be anywhere from 6 to 18 inches. It’s a good thing I purchased the snow shovel last week (in March no less). I asked someone when it would be safe to plant a veggies garden and they all keep telling me May (either Memorial Day or Mother’s day). I think I will plant a cool weather garden after the next round of snow; I am itching to dig in the dirt.

I just joined a secret sock yarn club, the Mean Girls Yarn Club, so now I need to learn how to kwitting (from Trek who calls it knitting and walking.) Anybody have any suggestions on how to start learning this fun little talent (or is it a skill)?

Blather, Manic Monday, and Contests

I started my homework swatching for my class on Wednesday; I am still not sure which fabric I like best. I guess I will take a poll in the class and see what they think. It’s wonderful to have such definite opinions about important things. :-) I am still trying to decide what to do with my time off at the end of the week. I will have 5 glorious days to myself to do exactly what I want to do; the problem is I cant think of anything. Any suggestions?

I forgot to tell you, I read a couple of books last week, one of which I found out about from Grace. That one was the Sweetgum Knit Lit Society by Beth Patillo and it was a heartwarming book, I enjoyed it. I also read Fed Up by Jessica Conant-Park and Susan Conant; it was a mystery about chefs, foods and romance. It wasn’t Agatha Christie, however it was entertaining.

Knit
Do you wear a watch? If so, tell us about it. If not, how do you keep track of time?
I don’t wear a watch, if I need to track time I use my cell phone. I try not to pay attention to time unless I am at work and have deadlines.
If it were possible, would you want to know how many days you had left to live?
No, I don’t want to know how many days I have left; I would just worry about it. I like not really knowing what will happen in the future and just living my life as it happens, with goals and wants.

Another One Done & a Contest

I finished the one for DD1’s boyfriend, T, last night and it is laid out being blocked right now. I also started two more, one is a Dr. Who scarf (see the picture) but I refuse to use a garter stitch for the whole thing, that is just
toooooo much to expect from a person :-), so I am mixing garter, stockinette, and seed stitches along with the colors. We also picked out different colors, as DD2 does not like the colors used in this one. And since nothing has to match, I can do the stitches as I feel or when I get tired of them. I also started a black scarf with no special pattern requested. I am going back to the stitch dictionary again for this one, though the first few rows have been the seed stitch.

I thought I was just about done with scarves, but now I have had a request for a couple more. I guess as long as my hands are busy it is okay to knit them. I will have to dig out a stitch dictionary to find a different way to make them, I am sick of the ones I have made so far.

My alpaca scarf that I have not yet start is going to be in the December is for Stephanie scarf pattern (you can see it here) that was suggested by LilChickadee. I am bound and determined to learn how to use graphs and this scarf will require it. I bet it takes me all summer to finish it, lololol.

A Contest and a Hawk

As you know, we have a small, 7lb. Chihuahua we call Lola (and Loopy). When I put her outside I always stay out with her due to the possibility of hawks and foxes. The lady who sold us this place warned me that she had had both in her yard when she put her dog out. Because of this I stay out with her (or at least keep her within eye sight, after all it is a very tiny backyard) no matter how many rock she has to sniff. Well, evidently my lazy ass daughter (aka DD2) is not so diligent, even though she knew that predators were a possibility in our fenced yard. This morning
she put Lola outside and came into the house to take care of business. When she got back out, there was a hawk sitting in the tree eyeing the dog. This of course meant that she had to come screaming into the house to wake me up and tell me that she wanted a gun kept by the door. I told her she was crazy, all she had to do was stay out there with her, and that killing hawks was against the law. She is now going to get a BB gun (that she is paying for) to scare the hawks off with, but in my mind it is just as easy to stand there. Isn't it funny how adult (she is 23) children can sometimes be as crazy as when they were small children? At what age do they grow up enough to be able to say, "I'm done!" Do you think that will ever happen?

HELP! and a Contest

I need help. Remember that Darn Scarf that was too short? I added the additional colors on the left side of the scarf. Unfortunately, the person I am knitting the scarf for is very symmetrical and sort of anal,(and it would drive him nuts if both ends don’t match) so I want to add the same stripes on the other end (the cast-on edge). How do I do that, there has to be a way and I know that someone must know how to do it. If you could even suggest where to go to find the information I would appreciate it. Contest and yarn

I have fallen in love with one of the new colors for the darn scarf. It is a chocolate brown and looks so wonderful, it makes me think of a wonderful smooth chocolate. It looks great with the other colors in the darn scarf, I would take a picture, however I know that I cannot do it justice.

The Darn Scarf and Contests

Thanks to everyone for the great ideas on how to fix the darn scarf that is too short, they were great; it is times like this when I realize how wonderful the blogging world and especially knitters are. I did call Elann, and just ordered some complementary colors of the same yarn, I will frog part of it and then work the stripes in. I am wondering how to do this to the beginning of the scarf though, the cast on edge, am I having a brain fart or what? I have never had to do this before, I am normally very certain I have enough yarn. And I will be again, for all future projects!

I have started another scarf, and I am trying a weird pattern that is coming to me as I knit and it is using the most awful yarn I don’t know why I am using it. But you know, I think the recipient will like it, don’t know why but. . .

Now, I have another question for everyone. I have the most wonderful alpaca that I purchased in Boulder Co from a woman who raises prize winning alpaca’s. I have 900 yards and the color is a blend of browns, grays, and cream that will go well with my new winter coat (a very impractical cream color, but very warm). So now I need a suggestion for a pattern for a scarf and /or hat. I am open to any and all suggestions, even if it takes me until next winter to complete it. I have a difficult time selecting patterns for specific yarn, so please provide any info on a scarf or hat that will be wonderful in the alpaca.

Blather and a Contest

When DD1 was home, she was hoping for snow and wouldn’t you know it the weather was in the 40’s almost every day (except for a couple of really cold freakish days).
She was very disappointed, but I think she had a good time anyway. We went for a ride up to Breckinridge so she could see the snow and the Eisenhower Tunnel.
We also went to Red Rocks just to look around; however that is almost the extent of the sightseeing we did while she was home, since she worked me to death during the first week of her visit. Here are a few pictures from our touring



I have a question for all of you. . .DD1 has been living with her man for a couple of years now and they have purchased a home together and are quite happy. The problem is I don’t know how to refer to him when writing or talking about him. Do I just call him Numbnuts, her significant other, or what? Or I could just call him DD1’s SO. I need help here, everything is so cumbersome, he is not a boyfriend or a husband so what do I call him? I know others have to have this issue, how did you settle it? Any help is appreciated. I guess for today he is Numbnuts, just because I can.

Anyway, if you remember I started Christmas knitting back in July, when Jane scared me into it. I completed a scarf for Numbnuts as the very first thing for Christmas of 08. Then we moved. Of course, I started looking for it in December so I could wrap it and put it under the tree, but guess what. I have not been able to find it anywhere. I know that it is back with some Noro Silk Garden (20 skeins of it) that I also cannot find. This is driving me nuts and I do not know where to look now. It’s not as if I live in a 10 room house, I live in a tiny townhouse, where could I have hidden it? I am stumped and of course I am also reknitting a scarf for him. Grrrrr

DD2 received a Wii from her boyfriend for Christmas and it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. We have had a great time playing with it. There is an issue though, have you ever heard of Wii injuries? I have what is known as Wii elbow (or tennis elbow for those of us who are a little older than generation X). It is an old injury that I thought had disappeared forever with the last cortisone shot I received about 7 years ago, but evidently, it is back. I love the tennis game, and I figured since the controller was so small it would not be an issue, but I am now in a brace for the duration and am not supposed to play, knit or use the computer for extended periods of time to rest the area. Now how is that going to work since my job is computer based? And, if I can’t knit I will not have any excuse not to clean house, so where does that leave me? I hope the brace helps, because I do not see any of that happening.

Clarification, Contest and Late

You know, I reread my comment on shopping on Black Friday, and I think I should restate my position as it sounds very harsh. I have no problem with people who shop on the holiday weekend, if that is how they want to spend their time, what I have a problem with is people who are so crazy for a deal that they can trample a man to death. I know that many people agreed with me about shopping, however I bet there were a lot more who disagreed. Another problem is how the retailers feed the frenzy, they make people feel that they have to get it on Black Friday or they will not be able to afford whatever it is they are trying to purchase, which is crazy, because in many instances the same item goes on sale three more times before Christmas. Anyway, I just wanted to say that my problem isn’t with people who shop (though how anyone could stand the crowds for a “deal” is beyond me), but with the frenzy and the mania around the shopping.

Well, for the post a day (National Blog Posting Month), I only did 22 out of a possible 30, which is much better than I normally do, but not posting every day. Nevertheless, when I have to resort to drivel, I figure no one wants to read it anyway. I am going to attempt to keep up the momentum, I know that I hate it when I go to someone’s blog that I love to read and the posting is not up to date, you know, those people who blog once a month, but what they write is great to read. Very disappointing.

I was late for work today because of the pretty(and cold)snow. I walked out to my car this morning and found a huge pile of snow in the shape of a car. It snowed all day yesterday and my car decided to let the snow sit on it so it was in camouflage. I battled my way to the car, started it, grabbbed the scraper/brush and started brushing it clear. It took me forever, I had no gloves or boots on and I became very cold very quickly. The snow was up to the knees of my pants and I sure wish I could park in the garage. I think I will be buying gloves and boots this weekend! Brrrrrrrrr

Cousins, a Diner and a Contest

Yes, I missed a day from the month-long daily blog, but I got to meet my cousins yesterday and it was great! I had not seen L and C for over 30 years and I did not realize how much I had missed them. I learned things about my family that I was not aware of (my grandmother played piano in a speakeasy to help support her children) and we are now planning a family reunion for next summer. There is only one member of our parents’ generation left and we are planning on having the reunion where she lives in the Antelope Valley, CA, so we know she can attend. We feel that it is important to get everyone together so we can become closer and make sure our shared experiences are passed to our children and grandchildren.

We went to the funniest diner for brunch, it is called the Bump and Grind and all the wait staff are cross dressers. It was so funny; those guys were walking around and serving wearing 5 inch hills (except for one who was dressed as a bobby soxer). They loved posing for pictures so we got several, but with our phones so the quality is not the greatest
(but then none of my photos are). The food was delicious if we good quit laughing long enough to eat it.

Chatter and Friday Fill-ins

It is snowing today and the high is expected to be around 38 degrees. Yuck! My poor Di decided it is too cold to go out so I had to go out with her, brrr. She told me that the snow hurts her knees and she did not appreciate being forced down the stairs and out the door in the dark of the morning. I told her that I did not appreciate being woken up in the night to lift her heavy ass (60 lbs) back into bed as she is now refusing to jump into bed. We laughed and hugged and she did her duty and I did mine (I sound like a whack job don’t I, but yes, I do talk to my dog and she talks back.)

I am starting (yes I have startitis) a new scarf for my daughter’s boyfriend, he is a nice guy and it the first boyfriend she has had in a zillion years that I appreciate. I am using Elann Highland Chunky and am doing it in a ribbing pattern on 15 needles. I love doing scarves because they are something I can do while playing cards, reading blogs, or watching TV and it appears that we will need them with the weather here in Colorado. In Georgia, we would get maybe one day of snow all year and it wasn’t terribly cold in the winter, but here. . .

A Contest, Just Because

This is a just because contest, just because I am in the mood to have one. I am going to be awarding knitterly prizes to the winners (there will be three). Probably some soft alpaca, bulky wool, maybe some sock yarn and some gadgets. To enter, all you have to do is comment, telling me your favorite yarn (it can be brand or type) and your favorite project, not that the yarn and the project have to go together. For extra entries, you can comment on other posts (an entry per post) and link this contest to your blog for another entry. In addition, you get an entry for every person you send this way.

The 1st prize will be the person with the most entries; the wonderful random generator will select the other two winners. The contest will be open until midnight November 23, 2008.

Is this easy enough? I am really looking forward to everyone’s entries and information on favorite yarns and projects.
